Kinsley

“I understand there’s been bad blood between you and Amos for years, but I have to ask – where were you on the night he was murdered?”

Silas’s expression hardened, his jaw clenching. “I was at home, as I am most evenings.” His tone carried an edge of warning, as if daring me to challenge his alibi.

Undeterred, I pressed on. “Can anyone vouch for your whereabouts that night?”

A muscle twitched in Silas’s cheek. “My household staff were present, but I don’t see how that’s relevant. I had no quarrel with Amos beyond our land dispute.” He straightened his already impeccable posture. “If you’re insinuating I had something to do with his death, you’re gravely mistaken.”

I held up a placating hand. “I’m not accusing you of anything, Mr. Blackwood. I’m simply trying to gather information from those close to the victim.”

Silas’s gaze flicked to Meri, who met it with an unblinking stare. “I see. Well, as I said, I was here all night. Perhaps you should be questioning that estranged son of his instead.”

My brow furrowed at the mention of Jace Weatherly. “You knew about the strained relationship between Amos and Jace?”

“Everyone in town knew about their issues,” Silas scoffed. “That boy was a constant disappointment to his father, from what I understood.”

Meri let out a derisive snort, drawing Silas’s attention once more. I shot my familiar a warning look before refocusing on the imposing man before me.

“Thank you for your time, Mr. Blackwood. I’ll be sure to follow up on any other leads.”

I forced a polite smile despite the growing unease coiling in my gut. As Meri and I turned to leave, his parting words sliced through the tense silence.

“I’d be wary of that coven if I were you, Ms. Wilson.” His tone carried a subtle edge, like the promise of a looming storm. “Some of them have coveted that herb on the Weatherly land for decades. Who knows what depths they’d sink to in order to control it.”

My steps faltered at the insinuation, but I refused to show any outward reaction. Keeping my expression neutral, I gave Silas a curt nod before continuing towards the gate. Meri’s tail swished in agitation.

As we passed through the ornate iron archway, I couldn’t resist a glance back at the immaculate grounds. Silas stood with his hands clasped behind his back, watching our departure with an inscrutable gaze. For a fleeting moment, I thought I detected a glimmer of something calculating in his eyes – a silent warning, perhaps, or the shadow of a challenge.

The hairs on the back of my neck prickled with unease. Silas’s parting remark had opened a new line of questioning, one that unsettled me more than I cared to admit. Could the coven’s desperation for that rare herb have driven them to take drastic measures?

Meri’s low growl snapped me from my troubled thoughts. With a shake of my head, I quickened my pace, determined to keep an open mind and not jump to conclusions. Still, a seed
